Abstract

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences of unmarried mothers of single children.
Methods: The research method was guided by Strauss & Corbin¡¯s (1988) grounded theory. In-depth interviews were conducted with seven adult unmarried mothers who were raising one child.
Results: From the open coding, 96 concepts, 32 subcategories, and 13 categories were derived. The central phenomenon that resulted from axial coding was ¡°my family boundary.¡± The selective coding produced the key category ¡°making my family.¡± The processes of the following four steps were analyzed: recognition and adjustment, solution-seeking, separation from the family-of-origin, and making new relationships with the family-of-origin.
Conclusions: When family counseling takes into consideration an unmarried mother¡¯s risk and protective factors, the family can operate well
